This lovely limited edition letterpress poster arrived in the post this morning, courtesy of my kind friends at St Jude’s. Designed and printed by Justin Knopp at Typoretum, the piece was originally created to accompany my interview with the Gentle Author of Spitalfields Life in the first issue of Random Spectacular.

The poster came in one of those long, heavy cardboard tubes that promise something wonderful. I ripped off the FRAGILE sticky tape and lifted the edge of the plastic cap. Out wafted a thick, inky, cottony, spicy aroma, just as if someone had opened the door to a busy print room on a hot summer’s day. The poster slid into the sunlight and all eyes were drawn to Justin’s work. He printed the piece in two colours on Somerset Velvet paper, using an 1851 Albion press with hand-typeset antique wooden and metal typefaces.

The poster will hang by our front door, about 200 feet from Brick Lane. If you would like one, Typoretum has some for sale here. A 20% donation will be made to Maggie’s Centres with each print sold.
